CLOSEOpen Enrollment Period (OEP)
Extends from January 1 through March 31 each year, during which you have one opportunity to enroll in, disenroll from or change a Medicare Advantage plan. Changes made during Open Enrollment become effective the month after the change is made. (You may not add or drop Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage during this time.)
Between January 1 and March 31st, you can make a one-time switch in your Medicare coverage, under certain circumstances, called the Open Enrollment Period:
- During the Open Enrollment Period, you have one opportunity to enroll in, disenroll from or change a Medicare Advantage plan to a like plan.
- If you have a Medicare Advantage plan without prescription drug coverage, you may not add Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage during this time
- If you have Original Medicare and a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan, you have one opportunity to drop your stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan and enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan with Prescription Drug Coverage (MA-PD plan).
- Changes made during Open Enrollment become effective the month after the change is made.
There are other circumstances under which you can enroll for coverage in 2010. You can enroll if you:
- Are new to Medicare.
- Recently moved outside of your current service area for Medicare Advantage health plans or Medicare prescription drug plans.
- Have both Medicare and Medicaid or your state helps pay for your Medicare premiums.
- Were recently approved for Extra Help paying for Medicare prescription drug coverage.
- Just moved into a long-term care facility (such as a nursing home).
- Recently left a PACE program.
- Recently involuntarily lost your coverage that is as good as Medicare's (also referred to as "creditable coverage").
- Are either losing coverage you had from an employer or leaving employer coverage.
Note: Those covered under Medicaid and Medicare are eligible to switch plans each month.
