Annual Election Period (AEP)
Medicare sets aside this period for enrollment in Medicare Advantage (MA) and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDP). During this time you have the opportunity to enroll in a MA or PDP plan, switch from your current plan or return to Original Medicare for coverage effective on January 1 of the following year.
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage plans are health plan options that are Medicare approved. If you join one of these plans, you generally get all of your Medicare-covered healthcare through that plan. Medicare Advantage plans (called MA plans) combine Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) together in one plan, and they can also be combined with Part D prescription drug coverage (called MA-PD plans).
Primary Care Physician (PCP)
A doctor that a member chooses to coordinate their healthcare with specialists and other providers. A PCP acts as the manager of your healthcare and can assist you in finding the right specialists when necessary. He or she is available to patients 7 days a week, 24 hours a day through regularly scheduled appointments or by other doctors providing "on-call" back up coverage. Most Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans require you to see your PCP before you see any other healthcare provider.
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
Sometimes called "managed care organizations," HMOs contract with doctors and hospitals who agree to accept their payments. In an HMO, you receive your care from the doctors, hospitals and other providers who contract with the HMO.
