Medicare Eligibility

There are circumstances under which you can enroll for coverage in 2010. You can enroll if you:

  • Are new to Medicare.
  • Recently moved outside of your current service area for Medicare prescription drug plans.
  • Have both Medicare and Medicaid or your state helps pay for your Medicare premiums.
  • Were recently approved for Extra Help paying for Medicare prescription drug coverage.
  • Just moved into a long-term care facility (such as a nursing home).
  • Recently left a PACE program.
  • Recently involuntarily lost your coverage that is as good as Medicare's (also referred to as "creditable coverage").
  • Are either losing coverage you had from an employer or leaving employer coverage.

Note: Those covered under Medicaid and Medicare are eligible to switch plans each month.

Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

Extends from January 1 through March 31 each year, during which you have one opportunity to enroll in, disenroll from or change a Medicare Advantage plan. Changes made during Open Enrollment become effective the month after the change is made. (You may not add or drop Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage during this time.)
