Special Clinical Programs for Members

Members in our plans with Community CCRxSM Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage can have peace of mind knowing their community pharmacists are truly involved in their care.

Our community pharmacists:

  • Help our members understand their drug regimens so they take the correct medicines and dosages.
  • Counsel their patients to help prevent dangerous drug interactions.
  • Work to save members money by helping them switch to lower-cost, equally-effective medications when appropriate.

Universal American has its own team of pharmacists that helps you stick to your long-term drug regimen for certain chronic diseases, like osteoporosis or asthma. We review how often you refill your medicines, and if we find you should be refilling them more often, we’ll contact your doctor and ask them to talk with you.

Help for Our Members with Diabetes

Two types of medicines – Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEIs) and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs) – have been proven to help with kidney and cardiovascular disease associated with diabetes.

  • As a result, doctors prescribed an ACEI or ARB for 41% of the members targeted in the program in 2008.
  • In 2008, our diabetes medication adherence program received the highest award in the Pharmacy Benefit Management Category of URAC’s Best Practices in Consumer Empowerment and Protection. URAC, an independent, nonprofit organization, is well-known as a leader in promoting healthcare quality through its accreditation and certification programs.
