Medicare Supplement Plan Options
If you’re looking for an alternative to a Medicare Advantage plan, you may want to consider a Medicare Supplement Plan from Universal American’s family of companies.
Medicare Supplement plans, often called “Medigap” plans, are health insurance plans sold by private insurance companies to help fill the “gaps” in Original Medicare Plan coverage.
Medicare Supplement insurance pays many of the out-of-pocket costs you’d otherwise need to pay yourself. For example, it usually covers most or all of Medicare’s coinsurance and deductibles for hospital stays (Part A) and physician charges (Part B).
If you are in the Original Medicare Plan and have a Medicare Supplement policy, then Medicare and your Medicare Supplement policy will pay both their shares of covered health care costs. You may be able to choose up to 12 different standardized Medicare Supplement policies (Medigap Plans A through L).
Each plan, A through L, has a different set of basic and additional benefits; however, the benefits in any Medicare Supplement Plan A through L are the same for any insurance company, so it’s easy for you to compare them. Most plans cover hospital stays when Medicare coverage ends. Some also cover physicians’ charges that exceed Medicare’s approved amount, as well as some in-home care.
Generally, when you buy a Medicare Supplement policy you must have Medicare Part A and Part B. You will have to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium. In addition, you will have to pay a premium to the Medicare Supplement insurance company.
